Accessory cord comes in various diameters — the right one depends on your intended use:

What is accessory cord used for?

Accessory cord serves a ton of different purposes from creating Prusik loops for self-rescue or as personal anchors in a Purcell Prusik to using it as cordelette in anchor building.

It can also be used for non-climbing related activities like securing tents, clothes lines, securing items to backpacks, etc.

What is the difference between climbing rope and accessory cord?

There's a reason why they're referred to as Rope vs Cord, instead of being lumped together.

Accessory Cord is typically between 2mm-8mm thick but is not suited for dynamic loads like lead climbing falls hence why you can't climb on it.

Climbing ropes are often 9mm-10mm which are suitable for falling on since they are stretchy (dynamic) which allows for a softer, lower impact catch.

Is an accessory cord the same as a cordelette?

Yes, you can create Cordelette out of accessory cord by connecting both ends together with a suitable knot like a double fisherman's knot.

Otherwise if you were to keep the cord untied and use it in anchor building, its typically referred to as Equalette.
